Every male Jew back then who was over 20 years old had to pay taxes every year to the Temple.  The tax was half a "shekel" or coin and it was equal to two days of work.  This tax provided the money that the Temple in Jerusalem needed.  The men usually collected it in the towns and villages for about 10 days.

Israel began with Jacob. God changed Jacob’s name to Israel around 1900 BC. That means one thousand nine hundred years before Jesus was born.
