Science

  1. Living World p 20-21 The Seas and Oceans
  2. Salt Experiments:
    • Ocean water contains about 3.5% salts.  99% of the ocean's saltiness comes from these six elements- sodium, sulfur, magnesium, calcium, and potassium.  Dissolve 1t salt in 10t water.  Taste the water, this is the approximate saltiness of the ocean.
    • Salt water is denser than freshwater.  So it is easier to float in the ocean.  Fill 2 large bowl represents a freshwater lake.  Gently place an egg in each bowl.  What do you observe? Why? (Note: The Dead Sea in Israel is the world's saltiest body of water.  It is nine times more salty than the ocean.  Because of it's high salt content, it is easy for swimmers to float there.  Locate the Dead Sea on a world map.)
